Thoughts on the "Nuisance Property Ordinance"
Update October 3, 2009: I have been asked several times where I stand on the Nuisance Property Ordinance, on the ballot this fall as 1B. As I stated at the forum on September 30, while I understand and appreciate the need for people to maintain their property, I just don't think it's any of the government's business to tell people when to repaint their house, or when to replace a cracked driveway. In this economic slump we're in, it seems to me that people are focused on taking care of their families and keeping their jobs. People can set their own priorities as to where to spend their resources, rather than maintining their property to someone else's standards.
Update October 12, 2009: This morning I spoke to a lady in Brandywine who is really scared of this ordinance. She and her husband are older, and have a cracked driveway and some other issues with their house. The problem is that he was laid off and she has health problems, and every time they try to save up money to fix the driveway, something happens and the money must be spent elsewhere. She knows that if cited she could go to the city and ask for an extension, but just the idea of doing that terrifies her. Folks, I absolutely understand that there are "problem" houses in Broomfield that really do need to be fixed up. I just don't think this is the way to go about it.
My Campaign "Platform"
I've always thought that if you're going to do something, do it to the best of your ability. I thrive on working hard, thinking hard, and getting things done. While it's every elected official's responsibility to give people a "voice" in government, elected officials are also responsible for carefully thinking decisions through to ensure that "unintended consequences" are minimized.
My specific campaign "platform" points are:
FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY. Overall, decades of smart fiscal management mean that even in a global recession, Broomfield's finances are in pretty good shape compared to other, more short-sighted cities. That didn't happen overnight, but if we're not careful with what we've got, if we don't make wise choices concerning taxpayer's money, it could all disappear overnight.
Just because we HAVE money doesn't mean we HAVE to spend it!
Since I originally wrote the paragraph above, the draft 2010 budget has been prepared. While I understand the need to have layoffs, I empathize with the 10 employees being laid off. Somehow, I don't like it that some of the same loyal city employees who offered to forego the annual employee appreciation picnic this year as a cost-saving measure will now be laid off, yet there are those on council who continue to spend taxpayer's money on expensive trips and such.
I'm no financial expert, but if revenues drop, spending must be cut and the budget must be balanced--never mind what the federal government does, at the city level, that's the way it is. I feel that the City needs to cut discretionary spending (e.g. the travel budget). We need to delay capital improvements projects. And, of course, we need to find ways to cut costs without cutting services.

PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE ECONOMY. Protecting the environment and conserving energy, water, and natural resources are ideas whose time has come. My family and I try to make good environmental choices--I ride my bike to as many appointments and errands as I can; rather than use a dryer we hang our clothes on the clothesline; we installed an expensive photovoltaic array on our roof; we reduce/reuse/recycle; etc. I believe that giving people access to solid information and letting them make their own decisions is the only way to make sure people can afford the increased up-front costs of environmental sensitivity.
Give good people good choices!
SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY. I've always thought that if you see something that needs doing, instead of just complaining about it, do it. Christians are taught that those who have been given many gifts and talents have a duty to give in turn--as noted by Bill Gates' mother, "From those to whom much is given, much is expected." Volunteering has been one of the most exhausting, challenging, stimulating, rewarding, wonderful experiences I could ever hope to have. I am looking forward to the work and challenge of city council! I'm committed to Broomfield!
